By Yap Zhao Hang, Rainbow Centre Singapore
Zhao Hang finds inspiration through his love for Singapore’s HDB flats. Sketching from photographs, he reimagines the buildings as lively characters, stacked playfully atop one another in a whimsical cityscape. With a palette of red, blue, green, and orange, he breathes warmth and rhythm into each block, painting with precision and charm. Zhao Hang brings the architecture to life; block numbers wear expressive faces, as if the buildings themselves are watching over the lives they contain. At the heart of the piece stands 12 Merpati Road, Singapore’s oldest flats, re-enchanted with personality and pride. In Zhao Hang’s art piece, he tells stories of community, memory, and the silent heartbeat of home.
