By Vincent Seet (Seet Kie Hong)

The painting is a homage to the Samsui women, known for their signature red headscarves (红头巾), who played a vital role in building Singapore’s early infrastructure. These resilient Chinese female immigrants arrived between the 1920s and 1940s, taking on backbreaking labour in construction to support both the nation’s growth and their families back home. Rendered in warm sepia tones, the artwork reflects a sense of nostalgia and sacrifice. A full moon hangs quietly above: a poignant symbol of longing and connection, echoing the verse “举头望明月,低头思故乡”. Through expressive brushwork, Vincent captures both the hardship endured and the enduring spirit of these women.
