By Christina Lau Lay Lian, Mouth and Foot Painting Artists
Peranakan tiles catch the eye with their vibrant colours and intricate geometric patterns. A cultural blend of Chinese, Malay, and European influences. Flowers bloom across their surfaces, birds perch mid-flight, and fruits ripen in perfect symmetry, each carrying wishes of prosperity, longevity, and harmony. Set into old shophouses and corridor walls, these decorative tiles are an irreplaceable part of Peranakan archives and architecture. Every piece is a fragment of culture in the region, stitched together in clay and glaze, where the past lingers softly beneath the soles of the present.
About
After a life-changing car accident in 2005 that left her with C6 spinal cord injury, Christina Lau discovered new ways to express herself through art. Despite being paralysed from her chest down and the loss of finger movements, she transformed her journey from Prison Officer to artist, demonstrating remarkable resilience. Through her artwork, she continues to share her unique perspective, proving that creativity knows no physical bounds.
