Elgin Bridge gracefully spans the Singapore River, linking North Bridge Road to South Bridge Road. First built in 1862, it was named after Lord James Bruce Elgin, the Governor-General of India (1862-1863) and the eighth Earl of Elgin — a tribute etched into Singapore’s early colonial history. For decades, the bridge stood as a silent witness to the rhythm of city life, until it gave way in 1927 and was replaced by the present Elgin Bridge. The present Elgin Bridge opened on 30 May 1929, carrying not just people and vehicles, but stories, memories, and the enduring spirit of connection across generations.
