Chinese street opera has played a pivotal role in defining Singapore’s identity. Its iconic Chinese opera masks or "Jing" masks feature unique colours and patterns, providing clues to the audience about a character's motives, character, or virtue. Inspired by this tradition, Christina Lau has painted four Chinese opera masks expressing the emotions of "喜 (happy), 怒 (angry), 哀 (sad), and 乐 (joy)", capturing the shared feelings that bring everyone together.
About
After a life-changing car accident in 2005 that left her with C6 spinal cord injury, Christina Lau discovered new ways to express herself through art. Despite being paralysed from her chest down and the loss of finger movements, she transformed her journey from Prison Officer to artist, demonstrating remarkable resilience. Through her artwork, she continues to share her unique perspective, proving that creativity knows no physical bounds.
