By Ng Siang Hoi, Friends of The Disabled Society

With every brushstroke, Ng Siang Hoi paints his past — A boy by the river, eyes wide with wonder. Born in silence, he never heard the calls of the boatmen, nor the chatter of traders crowding the shophouses. Yet he saw it all — the sunlit ripples, the worn hands lifting sacks of rice. The quiet struggles, the short-lived happiness. The river spoke not in sound, but in light and motion. Now, with each line and hue, he rekindles the world he once knew — A Singapore that lived through sight, heart, and memory. And now, in his art.

About

For over six decades, Siang Hoi has transformed silence into visual poetry through his distinctive mixed media artworks. Since learning from a Deaf art teacher at 14, he discovered in painting, its not just a passion, but a profound way to communicate with the world. Now at 75, he continues his artistic practice with the same quiet determination that has defined his journey. Working in a unique blend of watercolour, acrylic, and ink, he breathes life into nostalgic scenes of Singapore's past — from bustling marketplaces to riverside villages.
