囊中之物: In The Bag

While the owner may have forgotten the pearls resting inside the bag, the sparrow has not. Gently, it lifts a string of pearls from within with its beak, revealing to the owner what had long been out of sight and out of mind. Much like these hidden pearls, we too may overlook or neglect what we already possess, from material things, cherished relationships, or meaningful connections. Through this work, the artist hopes to remind viewers to always cherish what is already theirs and within their reach, and to see their world with a clearer, more appreciative perspective.

Serene’s artistic practice emerged through community arts programmes, where creative engagement supported her recovery journey while living with Schizophrenia. Through art-making, she developed greater connection, trust and openness. After exploring different mediums, she returned to Chinese ink, drawn to its aesthetics and philosophy. Her practice now serves as a space for reflection, self-regulation and creative inquiry, allowing her to engage deeply with herself and the world around her.
