Gazing Afar

A woman and two young girls frolic along the shoreline. There is a sense of lightness and freedom in the artwork as the ocean water washes up against their bare feet while their dresses flow gently with the cool ocean breeze. Walking hand in hand, they take in the picturesque view while staying connected with each other. The ocean waves gently crash onto the shore, and the sky above is softly coloured with hints of blue and pale pink, capturing the beauty of sunset. The painting exudes a sense of peace, warmth, and familial bond against the tranquil backdrop of nature.

Following a car accident that left Zhang Kaini paralysed from the shoulders down, the former Chinese language teacher chose to move forward with determination. She began painting using a brush held between her teeth, overcoming significant physical challenges. Through persistence and self-teaching, she became a successful artist. Her “colourful and cheerful” works reflect courage and optimism. A member of MFPA, the Singapore Art Society and ART:DIS, she also advocates for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities through her art.
