Smith Street, Chinatown

The artist portrays Smith Street in gentle pastel tones on a sunny afternoon. Located in the heart of Singapore’s Chinatown, Smith Street is was once famed as a Cantonese opera district and now celebrated as a cultural and dining hub. Surrounded by heritage shophouses and close to the Chinatown tourist belt, the artwork offers a tranquil glimpse of a place usually alive with activity.

Daniel Tan Beng Leong suffered a spinal cord injury in 1982, leaving him with Quadriplegia. In 2009, encouraged by friends, he began exploring mouth painting as a means of artistic expression. As a self-taught artist, he pursued this new path with determination and patience, steadily developing his practice over time. His works, often featuring vibrant animal themes and landscapes, reflect both his creativity and perseverance, growing into a distinctive visual language shaped by persistence and passion.
