Beach Play

"Beach Play" is a warm and cheerful celebration of leisure by the sea. Three figures in red and green swimsuits are absorbed in the simple pleasure of building sandcastles along a sun-drenched shore, while blue waves crash playfully in the background. The painting grew from a cherished Sunday memory, when the artist's brother-in-law would invite the family to East Coast Park after church, sharing a hearty meal of Katong laksa before heading down to the beach. His little boy loved building sandcastles, and even called out to the artist to join in, who laughed and declined, content to watch from a quiet spot with his wife. The memory stayed with him, and this painting is his way of joining in the fun at last.

Harry’s passion for art began in his school days in Malaysia, where he enjoyed poster design and decorative patterns. After moving to Singapore, he worked with Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) and later Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD), where he supervised an arts and crafts workshop. Following a second stroke that left him wheelchair-bound, he returned to painting with renewed determination, later earning second prize in an SPD art competition. Today, art remains a meaningful source of joy and self-expression.
