By Eugene Soh Yu Lin, Handicaps Welfare Association
This vibrant oil painting presents an abstract yet deeply emotive rendition of Singapore’s iconic skyline, offering more than a mere visual impression but also evoking the spirit of the city itself. Through bold strokes and vivid hues, the artwork reflects the intricate tapestry of cultural and social diversity that defines the city-state. The gentle reflections dancing across the water lend a sense of calm and unity, subtly underscoring the quiet equilibrium between tradition and modernity. The painting speaks to Singapore’s continual transformation, where heritage and innovation coexist in thoughtful harmony.
About
Eugene, a self-trained artist with a BA in Mathematics, began painting at 11 but stopped for over 10 years after a spinal cord surgery in 1981 left him Paraplegic. He later returned to art, finding inspiration in his memories of traveling with his wife and his deep faith in God. In 2003, he won a Silver Medal in Oil Painting at the 6th International Abilympics in New Delhi, and in 2014, he won first prize for "The Best Artwork for the Conservation of Coral Reefs" at the Voice of the Ocean competition.
