By Ng Siang Hoi, Friends of The Disabled Society
Chinatown was Ng Siang Hoi's playground, a living maze of lively streets where the artist darted between trishaws and market stalls, his friends laughing beside him. He watched his mother haggle with vendors, her hands moving with practiced ease as she chose the freshest produce. The air brimmed with the scent of spices, and the warmth of the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the worn cobblestones. Though he never heard chatters, he felt the heartbeat of the city — the flicker of lanterns, the rhythm of everyday life unfolding like a quiet dance. This painting captures those fleeting moments, offering a glance into a world that still lives on in his memory.
About
For over six decades, Siang Hoi has transformed silence into visual poetry through his distinctive mixed media artworks. Since learning from a Deaf art teacher at 14, he discovered in painting, its not just a passion, but a profound way to communicate with the world. Now at 75, he continues his artistic practice with the same quiet determination that has defined his journey. Working in a unique blend of watercolour, acrylic, and ink, he breathes life into nostalgic scenes of Singapore's past — from bustling marketplaces to riverside villages.
