The Flower that Faces the Sun

A dotted border, a clear blue sky, at the very center, sits an enormous sunflower, breaching the frame with its stretching petals. At the core of the flower, sits the disc florets, stamped on roughly with a brush to create a textured layer. The sunflower has received its name for always blooming towards the sun. While viewers admire the painting, the flower smiles back at them. Through this artwork, Michelle affirms viewers that even if they don’t realise it, they might be the sun to someone’s blooming flower.

Michelle discovered her artistic talent through adapted art sessions designed to support her physical and cognitive needs. Living with Arthrogryposis and moderate cognitive impairment, she faces challenges with mobility and communication. What began as a therapeutic activity became a meaningful form of self-expression, revealing her sensitivity to colour, pattern and composition. With support and adapted tools, she has developed a unique artistic voice. Her artworks reflect her creativity, resilience and ability to communicate through visual expression.
