By Wong Yoon Wee Chalmers
Jinrikisha Station, built in 1903, was not only a depot for rickshaws, but was subsequently used as a family-planning clinic, and a maternal and childcare centre. Intrigued by the diamond-shape of the building and the clock that hangs at the centre of the building, Chalmers decided to bring Jinrikisha Station to life. While working on this painting, the artist took delight in using the impasto technique and loose energetic brushstrokes to add energy and a painterly, expressive feel.
