Colourful Streets of Singapore 1: Chinatown

Fiery reds and yellows, balanced by cool blues set the scene of a buzzing marketplace. Executed in pointillism, the scene of bustling Chinatown streets come alive from countless tiny dots of colour. Collectively, the dots give the street a shimmering, vibrant texture that makes the energy of the moment almost palpable. Shops are open and crowded, with glowing lanterns overhead. People move through the scene, talking, shopping, and creating a lively, energetic atmosphere.

Following a car accident that left Zhang Kaini paralysed from the shoulders down, the former Chinese language teacher chose to move forward with determination. She began painting using a brush held between her teeth, overcoming significant physical challenges. Through persistence and self-teaching, she became a successful artist. Her “colourful and cheerful” works reflect courage and optimism. A member of MFPA, the Singapore Art Society and ART:DIS, she also advocates for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities through her art.
