By Zhang Kaini, Mouth and Foot Painting Artists
"Approaching Storm" portrays a tranquil seaside beneath an overcast sky, where a desolate shoreline meets calm, reflective waters. Layers of grey clouds drift above, casting a soft gloom that settles over the scene. The colour palette is subdued, consisting of gentle blues, muted greens, and earthy browns, with occasional flickers of white cresting atop quiet waves. Through delicate brushstrokes and translucent washes, Zhang recreates the melancholic stillness of the coast on a grey day. The atmosphere, both calming and haunting. As though one were standing alone at the water’s edge, quiet contemplations attempt to fill the vastness of the sea and the quiet unpredictability of nature.
About
Zhang Kaini was a Mandarin teacher in Singapore before a car accident left her paralysed from the shoulders down. Refusing to be defeated by her circumstances, she taught herself to paint by holding a brush between her teeth. With remarkable focus and determination, she made rapid progress and soon began earning a living through her art. Today, her intricate and expressive paintings of the natural world are highly sought after. As a full-time artist and member of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Worldwide (MFPA), Kaini continues to inspire others, especially Person with Disabilities (PWDs), through her resilience and creative spirit.
