Liang Seah Street was once a world of its own—where the aroma of kopi drifted through the air, blending with the sizzle of hawker woks, and rickshaws rattled past tailors bent over sewing machines. Life moved at a gentler rhythm then, settling into the cracks of the old shophouses, their wooden shutters creaking in the afternoon breeze. In the midst of it all, Ah Chew Hotel stood there quietly—not grand, but full of warmth and life. Travelers came and went—merchants, labourers, wanderers—each leaving behind whispers of their stories. When dusk comes, long shadows stretch across the pavement, folding the street into the warm glow of street lamps and conversation. The hotel is no longer there, and the streets have altered. But in the artist's painting, it still remains—held gently in memory, where time does not rush. Because some places never truly vanish—they continue to live on in the hearts of people who remember.
About
For over six decades, Siang Hoi has transformed silence into visual poetry through his distinctive mixed media artworks. Since learning from a Deaf art teacher at 14, he discovered in painting not just a passion, but a profound way to communicate with the world. Now at 75, he continues his artistic practice with the same quiet determination that has defined his journey. Working in a unique blend of watercolour, acrylic, and ink, he breathes life into nostalgic scenes of Singapore's past—from bustling marketplaces to riverside villages.
