By Christina Lau Lay Lian, Mouth and Foot Painting Artists
Little India is a vibrant cultural enclave where tradition lingers in the air and community life unfolds in vivid layers. Along Serangoon Road, the scent of jasmine garlands, spice-laden air, and curling incense drifts between goldsmiths’ counters, sari shops, and roadside stalls arranged with quiet care.
Brightly painted shophouses line the street, most typically are the blue buildings, with their timeworn wooden shutters and red-tiled rooftops, standing as witnesses to a living heritage. Temples and mosques rise side by side, murals slip into alleyways, their colours whispering stories across the walls. Every detail holds a trace of memory, each shaped by place, rhythm, and a deep sense of belonging.
About
After a life-changing car accident in 2005 that left her with C6 spinal cord injury, Christina Lau discovered new ways to express herself through art. Despite being paralysed from her chest down and the loss of finger movements, she transformed her journey from Prison Officer to artist, demonstrating remarkable resilience. Through her artwork, she continues to share her unique perspective, proving that creativity knows no physical bounds.
